Coverage & counting notesdate typos, what a case is, the employer match
A case is a concluded DOL compliance action. The source records whether violations were found and any back wages or penalties assessed. A closed action does not by itself establish a violation. Case identifiers remain in the dataset, API, and Markdown twin.
Findings dates outside 1900–2030 are source typos and are excluded from this browse; the raw record keeps them.
An employer match connects a case to an employer dossier through the recorded employer name. Cases without a match still count; they only lack the dossier link.

A court complaint is an allegation; check the docket for the outcome. An employer match connects records; it does not mean a suit concerns H-1B workers. Defendants who do not match an employer record are excluded from these counts.

WHD case data FAQ
What is WHISARD?
WHISARD (the Wage and Hour Investigative Support and Report Database) is the Wage and Hour Division's record of its enforcement cases, published through data.dol.gov. This page browses that release case by case.
How many WHD enforcement cases are in the record?
367,892 concluded compliance actions: $4.8B in back wages assessed and $384.5M in civil money penalties. These are the same figures shown in the metric strip above the table.
Are these numbers modeled or estimated?
The agency amounts come from DOL records. They are not model estimates. The release includes concluded compliance actions and records whether violations were found. The separate federal court section contains docket records, which can include unresolved allegations.
What counts as an H-1B violation case?
A case where DOL recorded violations of the H-1B statute provisions (counted per worker affected). The 'H-1B violation cases only' filter narrows to these; /enforcement aggregates them into national trends.
